CDF Freedom Schools® ProgramThe CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer and after-school enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
In November 2009, Trinity Church was accepted as a Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools® sponsor for Summer 2010. The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) (http://www.childrensdefense.org/) was founded in 1973 with a mission to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. The Trinity Church, Inc. CDF Freedom Schools® Summer Camp program delivers a literacy-rich model designed to serve children in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is rare, cost-prohibitive or non-existent. CDF Freedom Schools® programs feature a model curriculum for reading enrichment, youth leadership development, cultural enrichment, parent empowerment, civic engagement and social action. In partnership with schools, churches, community-based organization, and colleges and universities, the CDF Freedom Schools® program boosts children's motivation to read and generates positive attitudes towards learning, while connecting the needs of children and families to the resources of the community. A key goal of the CDF Freedom Schools program is leadership development: identifying, training, linking, and nurturing the next generation of servant-leaders. CDF Freedom Schools programs are staffed primarily by college educated young adults who are committed to active lives of leadership and service for children.
The Trinity Church, Inc. CDF Freedom Schools® Summer Camp Program 2010 will consist of fifty (50) students ages 5-14, along with college age servant leader intern, in a classroom ration of no more than ten students per servant leader intern. Summer Camp will begin on Monday, June 21, 2010 and end on August 13, 2010. The centerpiece of the Freedom Schools® Summer Camp program is the Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC). The books on which the IRC is based represent the work of the country's best writers and illustrators. The IRC book list is comprised of books that feature heroes, heroines, and settings that reflect the children's own cultural images and history. Classroom activities related to the day's reading use one or more of a variety of teaching models, including cooperative learning, role playing, and group discussions, and may include reading aloud, paired reading, creative writing, or visual arts. This range of activities ensures that children with diverse experiences, talents, and levels of confidence in reading and verbal expression are actively engaged.
Afternoon Summer Camp activities include dance, martial arts, musical theatre, physical fitness, and field trips. All Freedom Schools® Summer Camp students will participate in the Trinity Church Out of School Summer Camp Recital. The 2010 Summer Camp Recital musical will be "The Little Mermaid."
The Trinity Church, Inc. CDF Freedom Schools® After School Program will begin on Monday, August 23, 2010.

Dear Friends:
The State Attorney's Office recently awarded Trinity Church a grant in the amount of $25,765 from its Denise Moon Memorial Fund, a donor-advised fund at the Dade Community Foundation.
This fund was created to honor and memorialize a wonderful woman Denise Moon who fought so hard for the victims of crime when she served as the head of their victim's assistance program and who fought equally hard against her battle against cancer. While Denise passed away a few years ago, the State Attorney's office hopes that her great efforts will continue through the funding of grants from this Memorial Fund that will assist victims of crime, reduce crimes' effect on our community, and support efforts to reduce criminality and recidivism.
Trinity Church specifically applied to the Denise Moon Memorial Fund with the purpose of receiving funds to leverage ongoing Summer Camp funding from The Children's Trust. This summer, Trinity Church will provide The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools Program to fifty children within its larger summer camp program. The targeted population for the Freedom School will be children who currently participate in its Service Network for Children of Inmates. Each one of these targeted children have a mother or a father who are incarcerated.
